Our History

Historic Whitewood is abundantly rich in both history and beauty. Construction began on the main farmhouse in the 1857 by the Taurman family, but the Civil War interrupted its completion. As a result, a letter to Secretary Seward by a Taurman Confederate officer asked that Federal troops not burn down the house or building materials. It is unknown whether the letter had any impact. Thankfully, the materials and home remained unharmed.

When the war ended, the house was finally finished. Still standing on-site today, a small schoolhouse was used to educate the children of Charles Carter Lee of Windsor, brother of Robert E. Lee. Much handwork can be noted in the construction, and some of the additions were outbuildings later attached to the main house.

Today, the elegant and charming atmosphere of Historic Whitewood serves as the perfect site for weddings, corporate events, and other special occasions.
